'Americanese' uses documentary images to create a personal narrative around the American experience. As a Canadian growing up in the shadow of American culture, the U.S. seemed a mythic place despite our superficial similarities. Having immigrated to the U.S. as an adult, my journey with this project has been to separate the myth from reality and to create a new narrative, one that resonates with me in the context of modern history and events. Shot over several years and across multiple states, the photos explore common aspects of American life: history, religion, home, etc. Taken as a whole they suggest that something darker is at play, a recalculating of the American Dream, but leave the viewer with impressions rather than firm conclusions. The story remains ambiguous and ever-changing.
